Test 62, Passage 4 - Sarah Orne Jewett
Highlights
In Francesca’s last Demon class, the group differentiated between competing notions of what fiction should do. Does the song-and-dance Ken scene need to mean anything? Or can a Barbie subplot have value in and of itself?
When you’re trying to figure out what the main point is, you can start by asking myself what the purpose of the passage was (here, the purpose was to answer the question, “Should we lump Jewett in with the domestic novelists?“). Then, ask yourself the obvious follow-up question (here, it’s, “Okay, so SHOULD we lump her in?“); the answer (“no! Because XYZ!“) is usually the main point.
Francesca is a 2L at Penn Carey Law with two years of teaching for LSAT Demon under her belt. Since studying with the Demon in 2021, she has believed that with effective study habits and consistency, anyone can see how this test makes perfect sense.
