Your Ultimate RC Study Guide
Mastering Reading Comprehension (RC) can feel daunting, but consistent practice makes all the difference. RC isn’t about speed, tricks, or memorization. It's about understanding. When you read the passage carefully and follow the author’s reasoning, the questions become easy.
Read For Understanding
Your job on RC is to understand what the author is saying, why they’re saying it, and how their ideas fit together. Active reading may feel slower at first, but engaging with the passage leads to better understanding.
Avoid skimming for keywords and highlighting. Instead, focus on meaning. Let the question, “What is the author trying to accomplish here?” guide you. When you understand the passage as a whole, the details fall into place.
Take Your Time
Give yourself permission to slow down enough to understand the author’s main point. Spending a few extra seconds to understand the passage will save you time later. Real speed is a byproduct of clarity.
Follow The Author And Structure
Every passage has an author with a point of view. Your job is to follow that perspective from start to finish. Pay attention to tone, opinions, and shifts in emphasis. Notice what each paragraph contributes to the passage’s overall argument.
Use The Passage To Answer Questions
Every correct answer is supported by the passage. When answering questions, lean toward choices that are boring, obvious, or vague. Ask yourself: “Is this answer choice stated in the passage?”
Treat each RC question as a Must Be True. If an answer choice goes beyond what the author says, distorts their view, or introduces new ideas, eliminate it.
